One more week to ski then its officially mud season!! Winter Park Ski Resort is closing next Sunday, April 19. Every year the area closes with Spring Splash where the brave attempt to cross the pond at the bottom of Larry Sale. There are many celebrations at the area to help close another ski season. You'll find tailgating in the C-lot, bands scattered around the resort, lots of BBQ-ing and partying and of course, your last chance to take some lift served skiing or snowboarding. I received a postcard in the mail for next year's pass already. It was boasting a big discount on the Rocky Mountain Super Pass where you can ski Winter Park, Mary Jane, Copper Mountain and Steamboat (Steamboat pass usage had some limitations). Supposedly it is $40 less than the 08-09 Super Pass. I don't know if you have to be a repeat season pass holder but I have never bought the Super Pass and I got the invitation. The offer is only good until April 19, 2009 according to the notice I received. Check it out at www.skicolorado.com As for the official start to mud season, I'm happy to say it's already started...with the actual mud that is. Despite the messiness and variable weather, mud season is one of my favorite times of year here. Here are some of the things to take advantage of during this time: -short lines at Safeway - you see more people you know out and about - there is always a seat at the bar or restaurant (if the establishment is still open) - you can cross the street without looking both ways -it's a great time to come look at real estate as places are quiet and vacant. If I were a city dweller looking for peace and quiet, I would come to the mountains for mud season!
