Arapaho National Forest Tree Removal Projects in Grand County - by Jean Wolter

The onslaught of the Pine Beetle infestation in the past decade has decimated over 80% of the forest in Grand County. The dead trees that remain pose a huge risk to public safety and they can impact the roads and trails that we love to recreate on in the Arapaho National Forest. If you plan on spending any time in the Arapaho National Forest this summer you may have to alter your plans, as the Forest Service is working on removing trees that pose a hazard to the public on trails and roads in the forest surrounding the Grand Lake, Granby, Tabernash and Winter Park areas. They have strategically set up work projects to help keep the forest open for most of the summer. For example, they arent starting to work on the areas around the Winter Park Bike trails until later in the fall. So, when you are making your plans this summer check in with the Sulphur Ranger District for accurate and updated information so you can adjust accordingly.
