December Trail of the Month

I am very much a follower when it comes to skiing. I'm justhappy to be out on the hill, enjoying my turns and typically don't care what I ski so I let my ski buddies (or my kids) choose where we go. My favorite ski trail is probably my husband and kids favorite by default: Retta's Run.

In the olden daysbefore cell phones, my husband would meet his ski pals, which eventually included me, under the Eskimo chair. If you made continuous laps on Retta's run, your friends (and strangers) could find you from the lift. While some find the lift exposure intimidating, it can still be a good place to run into folks you know if you forget your phone in the car. Its fun too if you like showboating or getting great face shots on a powder day. Because it is somewhat sheltered and north facing, the snow usually stays nice and chalky too.

Before it was Retta's Run, the trail was where the Meteor T-Bar was located. This wasone of the first "lifts" at Winter Park Resort. The namesake, Retta Stanley, was a tireless volunteer for the disabled program now known as NSCD, the National Sports Center for the Disabled. Retta becamea champion three-track skier after losing her ownleg to cancer. She eventually lost her battle with cancer in the late 70s.
