-Rollins Pass was used as a prehistoric hunting ground by Native Americans in the area. He pioneered a wagon toll road through the pass, enabling travelers to go between the Colorado Front Range and Middle Park. Later in the 19th Century, cattlemen drove cattle over the pass, as well. -In the early part of the 20th Century, Rollins Pass was used as a railroad pass. The line was established by a wealthy Denver banker, David Moffat. The treacherous rail system had a 4% grade for much of the trip and included dangerous maneuvers like a near 90-degree gradual turn and descent of 150 feet of elevation. Winter eventually did the railroad in, due to heavy snows and sky-high maintenance costs, not to mention the constant peril in which railroad workers found themselves.
