Colorado is a gorgeous state, no matter the season. In the spring, youll notice an abundance of colorful wildflowers. The summer brings beautiful weather. Cooler weather in autumn brings vibrant fall foliage, and winter brings brilliant blankets of snow. Year-round beauty means that you can go on a scenic drive any time and see marvelous natural beauty. If youre having trouble deciding where to start, weve listed some of our favorite Grand County scenic drives below.
Grand County Scenic Drives
1. Trail Ridge Road
Trail Ridge Road is possibly the most popular scenic drive in the area, and with good reason. Its the highest continuous highway in North America, threading through Rocky Mountain National Park and crossing the Continental Divide. Not only will you be at a fantastic vantage point when making the ascent up Trail Ridge Road, but youll also pass through an astonishing variety of environments as the elevation changes.
2. Berthoud Pass
This main entrance into Grand County offers dramatic views. Curving mountain roads reveal new scenery with each turn, and after each twist of the road youll be rewarded with unbelievable panoramas.
3. Ute Pass
If youve already taken the scenic drives above and want to explore a different area, head over to the Arapaho National Forest to traverse the Ute Pass. As you drive along, youll be able to see for miles around, including features like the Williams Fork Reservoir and a large salt flat formed by runoff from a mining operation. Keep an eye out for wildlife, toobear, moose, and other local wildlife can often be spotted from this drive.
4. Colorado River Headwaters National Scenic Byway
You know you will be guaranteed a scenic drive when its certified as such. This lovely drive begins in Grand Lake and follows the Colorado River until it reaches Gore Canyon. Its a good way to see various scenic towns in Grand County, too, as it passes through several of them. Youll also see sweeping mountain valleys, dramatic canyons, and more on this route.
5. Corona/Rollins Pass
A drive on this pass is a great way to enjoy the scenery while also witnessing traces of history. Youll be driving along the old railroad route that used to take travelers over the Continental Divide until the Moffat Tunnel was built. It is recommended that your vehicle be four-wheel drive, as this road is unpaved. These are just a few of the many scenic drives in Grand County and the surrounding area. Youll find plenty of scenic drives near Denver, too.
